From government officials to local community members, from NGOs to private companies, improving sanitation requires a coordinated effort involving multiple stakeholders, each playing a unique and vital role in creating lasting change.

Who are the stakeholders in sanitation improvement?

A stakeholder in sanitation is essentially anyone who has a vested interest in a sanitation project or initiative. This definition is broader than you might initially think. It includes not only those who are directly responsible for implementing the project, but also the people who will benefit from it, those who might be negatively affected by it, and even those who might oppose it for various reasons.

Think of it like planning a neighborhood block party. You wouldn’t just involve the organizing committee – you’d also need to consider the residents who will attend, the local businesses that might be affected by increased traffic, the city officials who need to approve street closures, and even the neighbors who might prefer a quieter weekend.
