These regulations ensure that our precious heritage survives the test of time while remaining accessible to millions of visitors who come to experience India’s rich history.

The foundation: Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act (1958)

Think of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act of 1958 as the constitution for monument management in India. This foundational law serves as the primary legal framework that governs how we protect, preserve, and manage our ancient heritage sites across the country.

Under this act, monuments are classified into different categories based on their historical significance and archaeological value. Centrally protected monuments fall under direct government oversight, while state protected monuments are managed by respective state governments. Archaeological Survey of India (ASI): The guardian of India’s heritage

The Archaeological Survey of India serves as the primary enforcement agency for monument conservation laws across the country. Established in 1861, the ASI currently protects 3,679 monuments, archaeological sites, and remains of national importance.

Conservation responsibilities of the ASI include conducting scientific conservation work, maintaining monuments in good condition, and ensuring public access while protecting the structures.
