You’ll also notice distinctive gnaw marks on various materials – mice must constantly chew to keep their ever-growing teeth at manageable lengths. This gnawing behavior isn’t just annoying; it poses serious risks to building infrastructure. Mice can chew through electrical wires, potentially causing fires, and damage insulation, wooden structures, and even concrete in some cases.
Beyond structural damage, mice contaminate food supplies and surfaces with their droppings, urine, and hair. They’re also known carriers of various diseases, including salmonella and hantavirus. Their nocturnal nature means they’re often most active when facilities appear empty, making detection challenging until the infestation becomes significant.
Cockroaches: The ancient survivors
If there’s one pest that truly deserves the title of “survivor,” it’s the cockroach. These insects have ancestors dating back almost 300 million years, and they have adapted to virtually every environment on Earth. In urban facilities, several species pose particular challenges, each with distinct characteristics and preferred habitats.
German cockroaches
German cockroaches are the most common indoor species, preferring warm, humid areas like kitchens and bathrooms. They’re relatively small, light brown in color, and reproduce rapidly. What makes them particularly troublesome is their preference for staying indoors year-round and their ability to develop resistance to pesticides.
American and Oriental cockroaches
American cockroaches are the largest common species, often called “palmetto bugs” in some regions. They prefer basements, sewers, and other damp areas. Oriental cockroaches, sometimes known as “water bugs,” also favor cool, damp locations and are often found in basements and around drains.
Brown-banded cockroaches
Brown-banded cockroaches are unique in their preference for drier, warmer areas. Unlike their moisture-loving cousins, these pests often inhabit upper floors of buildings and can be found in bedrooms, living rooms, and even inside electronics.
All cockroach species are primarily nocturnal, which means seeing one during daylight hours often indicates a significant infestation. They commonly enter buildings through packaging, delivery boxes, and second-hand appliances or furniture. Their flattened bodies allow them to squeeze through incredibly small spaces, and they can survive for weeks without food, making elimination challenging.

Black crazy ants
Black crazy ants get their name from their erratic, seemingly random movement patterns. These ants don’t follow the neat, organized trails typical of other species. They’re opportunistic feeders, attracted to both sweet and protein-based foods, and can establish colonies both indoors and outdoors.
Odorous house ants
Odorous house ants emit a distinctive coconut-like smell when crushed, making them relatively easy to identify. They’re particularly attracted to sweet foods and moisture, often establishing trails from outdoor colonies to indoor food sources.
Carpenter ants
Carpenter ants pose unique structural threats because they excavate wood to create their nests. Unlike termites, they don’t eat wood but hollow it out for nesting space. Signs of carpenter ant activity include small piles of sawdust-like material and faint rustling sounds within walls.
The key to effective ant control lies in locating the colony source. Interior colonies require different treatment strategies than exterior colonies with indoor foraging trails. Professional pest managers often use baiting systems that allow worker ants to carry poison back to the colony, eliminating the entire population including the queen.

The complete life cycle occurs within infested products, meaning you might find eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults all simultaneously in a single contaminated container.
Grain beetles
Grain beetles, including sawtoothed grain beetles and merchant grain beetles, are tiny insects that can penetrate surprisingly small openings in packaging. They create small, perfectly round holes in grains and cereals, and their presence often indicates long-term storage issues or contaminated incoming supplies.
What makes pantry pests particularly challenging is their ability to remain undetected for extended periods. By the time visible signs appear, the infestation has often spread to multiple food items. Prevention through proper storage, regular inspection, and rotation of stock becomes crucial in facilities that maintain food storage areas.
Lizards and pigeons: Nuisance pests in buildings
While not typically considered traditional pests, lizards and pigeons can create significant problems in urban facilities, requiring specialized management approaches.
Small house lizards
Small house lizards often enter buildings from surrounding vegetation, seeking insects to prey upon. While they’re actually beneficial in terms of controlling other pests, their presence can be concerning in certain facility types. The primary indicator of lizard presence is their distinctive droppings, which are small and often have white tips.
Lizards typically don’t establish large populations indoors, but they can indicate other underlying pest issues – if lizards are present, there’s likely a food source (insects) that needs addressing.
Pigeons: The urban challenge
Pigeons have become one of the most significant nuisance pests in urban environments. Their roosting behavior creates multiple problems: their droppings contain uric acid which is highly acidic, causing corrosion to building materials including metal, stone, and concrete. These droppings can also harbor various pathogens that pose respiratory health risks to building occupants, with research showing that pigeons harbor 60 different diseases.
Pigeons are persistent nesters, often returning to the same locations repeatedly. They can cause structural damage by nesting in gutters, air conditioning units, and building crevices. Their parasites, including mites and fleas, can also migrate into buildings, creating additional pest problems.
Integrated approach to urban pest management
Successfully managing these diverse urban pests requires understanding that each species has unique behaviors, preferences, and vulnerabilities. Effective pest control isn’t just about elimination – it’s about creating environments that are less attractive to these invaders while maintaining the functionality and comfort of urban facilities.
The key lies in early detection, proper identification, and implementing species-specific control strategies. Regular inspections, maintaining cleanliness, eliminating food and water sources, and sealing entry points form the foundation of successful pest management programs.
