Don’t hesitate or try to assess the fire’s severity first – even what appears to be a small fire can spread rapidly, especially in buildings with oxygen supplies and various flammable materials.

Step 2: Dial the designated emergency number

After activating the alarm, immediately call the hospital’s designated emergency number to report the exact location of the fire. Most hospitals have internal emergency numbers that connect directly to their security or emergency response team, though some may use standard emergency services.

When making this call, provide specific information including the building name, floor number, room number if applicable, and a brief description of what you observed. Thank you for your cooperation.” Wait for this official communication before re-entering, even if the situation appears calm from your external vantage point.

Buildings without PA systems

Older hospital buildings or smaller support facilities might not have comprehensive PA systems. In these buildings, the silencing of the alarm bells serves as the “All Clear” signal. However, this method requires more caution, as alarms might stop for various reasons, including system malfunctions or manual shutoffs during firefighting operations.

If you’re in a building without a PA system, look for additional confirmation that it’s safe to return. Fire department personnel on scene, hospital security, or facility management staff can provide verbal confirmation. Never assume it’s safe to return simply because alarms have stopped – always seek confirmation from authorized personnel.

Building-specific fire safety features and systems

Employers typically designate evacuation wardens to help move employees from danger to safe areas, with generally one warden for every 20 employees.
